Brett's Biography: My name is Brett William Patterson and I am twenty-one years old. While attending high school at Wartburg Central High School my teacher, Teresa Woods-Gouge, first introduced me to the world of Web Design. After graduating high school, I worked for a few months in Alabama as a construction worker. I decided real quick-like that I needed to get further my education - so I began looking for a technical school to attend. I ended up at the Tennessee Technology School at Harriman under Kim Kruse taking Web design. I joined SkillsUSA in 2008, and have competed at the national level twice. Before the national competitions in 2008, my partner, Jeremy VanNorstran, and I competed at the state level and placed 1st, after which we competed nationally and received 6th place. The second year, I competed in SkillsUSA with my new partner, Karen Gilmer. Karen and I competed at state level, received 1st place, and then competed nationally winning 3rd place. My partners and I would not have done as well in any of the competitions without the help of our advisor, Kim Kruse. Kim supported us every step of the way by focusing our studies in needed areas.
I look forward to competing in the WorldSkills Competition for the knowledge that I will gain. I have learned through past state and national competitions that one gains a lot of knowledge when preparing for each competition that he or she faces. As I am one who loves learning, this chance to compete has presented me with a great opportunity to learn things that I have wanted to learn but have not yet had the chance to. I am also competing because I love America and I want to ensure that the world knows what kind of Web design students the United States can produce! Hopefully, through my competing, future students can have a chance to compete, too.
CAREER GOALS
I am currently enrolled at Pellissippi State Technical Community College and plan to transfer to UT to further study Computer Science. Upon graduating college, I would like to continue working at the Knoxville Utilities Board where I am currently a student worker in the Information Technology (IT) department. My long term goal is work for the United States government.
